Janet Summers

On April 24, 1945 I was born to Lee and Margie Birkle. I was the second out of five children. We lived in a rural part of southern California where I was free to run barefoot exploring all of Mother Nature’s treasures and I fell in love with flowers, birds and all the beauty in my outdoor world. Throughout childhood I enjoyed drawing the beauty I saw. I took a couple of art classes in high school but I am basically a self taught artist.

At the young age of eighteen I married and in thirteen years had seven children. Having a large family was something I wanted and was a great joy to me. So during the thirty plus years I raised my family I put my art on the back burner. I kept my love of nature alive by planting large flower gardens wherever I called home. After my children were raised I ran an Adult Foster Care Home for Elderly Women with my mother. Three years later when she passed away I went back into real estate selling rural properties in the beautiful Applegate Valley in Oregon.

During these years I started painting in watercolor and oil. What a joy is was to be painting again. In the winter of 2009 while sitting in my home in Grants Pass, Oregon I decided I was done with the snow and cold. I talked to my two sister and we decided to move to Mexico.

From 1963 until now I have only painted for my own pleasure. Here I am a senior citizen living in of Lake Chapala, excited to discover and paint Mexico’s beauty and ready to share my art with the world.
