This painting features a beautiful African queen cradling a rare pangolin, one of the most poached and endangered animals in the world.
She is dressed in royal finery surrounded by exotic flowers and creatures in the wilderness, representing the role of women in Africa as the heart of the family unit and village life. The faces in the flowers express various emotions surrounding both the exploitation and preservation of indigenous life – truth, ignorance, hope, curiosity, indignance – as Africa seeks to maintain balance between the ancient and modern worlds. The future of humanity itself is symbolized by a golden pangolin wrapped in a white blanket, precious cargo cradled gently in the arms of Africa.
This oil painting was created using dozens of layers of oil paint, translucent impasto, metallic powders, and translucent glazing material. It has a gentle brush-stroke texture across the surface of the work. The process of layering glazes, oils, and metallics took six months to complete, resulting in a vibrant depth of color and a luminous overall appearance.
Oil painting on canvas (Gallery-Wrapped) 90cm x 120cm (36″ x 48″)
